Godzone Adventure Race
Team Cure Kids Summit Mount Owen on Day 5
Race Release / 06.04.2016
Richie McCaw and the Cure Kids team summited Mt Owen as the sun rose on the fifth day of their GODZone adventure.
Rob Nichol, Sarah Fairmaid, Ben Meyer and McCaw were captured at the top of the mountain by Richard Chadderton, who mans the check point at the summit.
They are raising money for children’s charity Cure Kids, with donations so far topping $294,000.
McCaw said his former All Blacks teammates “have got it easy” after canoeing down the Matakitaki River.
Asked how GODZone compares to rugby, he said: “Bit different, actually that was really enjoyable going down the river.
“The race is really tough. At 5am this morning walking down the hill my legs were wobbling, it was a bit tougher than rugby.”
Talking about why he was tempted to give adventure racing a go, McCaw said: “You get curious.
“I guess it’s a question of can you handle it. That’s the bit that gets me going and until you do it you don’t know if you can. You open yourself up to failure too.”
