The race has a maximum of 32 teams, selected from among the world's best. (There is no nationality qualification for MSOQ.)
2002 is the first time the race had taken place outside China and the course makes the most of the jungles and mountains of Sabah.
The race is over 4 days, but first there is a prologue where teams will race in dragon boats. The event is a stage race, with a marked course, so no navigation is required and there is no racing at night.
