Super Heroes to the Rescue at Lakeland Trails, Staveley

Press Release / 08.06.2011
Two members of Kendal Mountain Rescue, John Hall and Stan Akrigg, donned their capes and transformed into super heroes to patrol the Lakeland Trails event in Staveley on Saturday 4th June. In sweltering heat, the two masked mountain rescue men ran around the tough 17km Kentmere Trail course to raise funds for the Rescue.

Their only concern was having to be rescued themselves through heat exhaustion in the hot conditions, yet Spiderman Stan finished an amazing 25th in the Challenge event, with Batman, Kendal dentist John Hall, not much further behind. The Super Hero effort, along with their fellow supporters along the route, will generate well over £1000 for Kendal Mountain Rescue, an amazing achievement.

Members of the Lake District National Park Authority were also involved in a super hero effort of their own as they worked hard throughout the build up to the event on the new footbridge to the finish on the Recreation Ground. Work was completed on the Friday afternoon, just in time for the event, and an official opening of the bridge will take place in the next few weeks.

Husband and wife GB Internationals, Russell and Pippa Maddams, from Keswick AC, dominated both the men's and women's races, with Russell breaking the course record to finish in 70 minutes and 2 seconds. His fine form follows on from winning the UK Trail Running Championships two weeks ago. British fell running champion Pippa found the tough, hilly course to her liking and finished an astounding 5th place overall in 79 minutes and 13 seconds.

Australian visitor John Keats descirbed the event as one of the best, most scenic and toughest race he had ever done, but still managed to finish 3rd Veteran 40. Oldest competitor, 78 year old Malcolm Ball from Norfolk, won the Vet 70 category.

One thousand runners from all over the UK competed in the various events throughout the day, including visitors from Australia, USA, Sweden, Germany, France and Ireland. Kookaburra All Stars Samba Dumming Band provided live entertainment throughout the day, with singer Pete Lashley performing at the prize giving. Claire Maxted, editor of National magazine Trail Running, ran the 17km race and presented over £1000 worth of prizes. The event was supporting the local Kendal Mountain Rescue, along with the regional charities Cancer Care and North West Air Ambulance.

The new Lakeland Trails Marathon at Coniston on 3rd July has closed entry early due to demand and is now full. The next Lakeland Trails event with places available is in Keswick on 3rd September with only a few places left.
