Landing in Hong Kong for its third year, the much anticipated Asian Skyrunning Championship – MSIG Lantau 50 is taking off from Tung Chung, Hong Kong on December 3, 2017.
As one of the most difficult courses in Asia, MSIG Lantau 50 continues to attract numerous trail running elites from around the world to compete in the race. Clemente cemented his place as one of the world’s best trail runners, by coming 2nd in this year’s (2017) Trail World Championships. In 2016, he also won the prestigious 2016 Ultra Skymarathon Madeira and the Run the Rut race.
Three distances will be on offer at MSIG Lantau 50 with a 16km course contouring the ridge from Sunset peak to Pak Mong, while the 27km course going over Lantau and Sunset Peak down to Pak Mong. For the 54km race, participants will be heading from Tung Chung to Ngong Ping and along the Keung Shan ridge down to the Shek Pik area; and back over Lantau and Sunset Peaks then contouring around and down to Pak Mong before heading back to Tung Chung for the finish line (for all three distances) at Man Tung Road Park.
Starting at 6:30 am, the 54km category is a very tough and technical course with over 3500m elevation gain and over 3500m elevation loss. The 27km and the 16km start at 7:30am and 7:45am respectively.
Taiwanese elite, Chou Pin-chi is competing in MSIG Lantau 50 for his first time. “I am glad to be the representative of Taiwan; however, I won’t put much pressure on myself but treasure this opportunity to meet with, learn from and compete against different overseas elites.”
Also for his first time, Affindi from Malaysia is excited to take the challenge. “I am expecting a new challenge from MSIG Lantau 50 because the weather difference between Hong Kong and Malaysia will definitely make the race more challenging to me. But I have got myself prepared, both mentally and physically, and I can’t wait to be on the course!”
One of the Japanese representatives, Yukari Hoshino, is looking forward to being part of the race. “I am really excited to compete with all these international elite runners. I have participated in MSIG Lantau 50 before, the technical course with stone stairs and numerous uphill-downhill sections have left me a memorable impression and I would like to take the challenge once again!”
