The first AR World Series race of 2018 will kick off in Belize on the 24th Feb with the Maya Mountain Adventure Challenge.

15 Teams from around the world are now arriving at the Cahal Pech Resort in Belize to begin the pre-race preparations. A number high profile AR World Series teams are getting an early start to the season including three French teams Naturex (ranked 4th), Agde Raid Aventure (ranked 24th), Sportera (ranked 91st); two teams from the Czech Republic, Fenix Multisport (ranked 53rd) and Salomon Suunto CZ AR (ranked 40th); and Team Bones (ranked 17th) will be flying the USA flag during the race.

Other countries represented at the Maya Mountain Adventure Challenge include Switzerland, Brazil, USA, Canada, Mexico and a local team from Belize.

The course overview has been released and teams will complete 10 legs of adventure disciplines including mountain biking, caving, pack rafting, canoeing, roping, canyoning and jungle trekking over a 516km course.

Race Director Doug Crytzer said to teams “We have endeavoured to create a course that will transport you back in time and reconnect you with an era when people lived symbiotically with the natural world - you will experience epic sink holes, mammoth caves, majestic waterfalls, captivating flora/fauna, and vistas of endless natural beauty.”

True to this endeavour the race has organised with the Institute of Archaeology of Belize to host team registration and map handout in the main plaza of Cahal Pech Archaeological Ruin on the 24th Feb. Cahal Pech was first settled sometime around 1200 B.C. and abandoned around 800 -900 A.D.

Teams will start the race Sunday morning 25th Feb local time. They will carry the YB satellite trackers and their progress can be followed online at https://www.mayamountainadventurechallenge.com/

The series will continue with a Qualifier race held every month through to September and followed by the AR World Championship 2018 on Reunion Island in November. There are also four new demonstration races held through the year.
