Two weeks ago, the Steering Committee of the International Adventure Racing Association (IARA) presented their three-year Strategies and Priorities document to Members.

At the end of 2024, following consultation with Members and the international AR community, a diverse range of topics relevant to the sport of adventure racing were presented as being important to the global community. The committee distilled these ideas to create a strategy of STRONG ADVENTURE RACING to guide the organisation’s activities for the next three years.

Within STRONG ADVENTURE RACING are the three pillars of: Strong Organisation, Strong Membership and Strong Sport.

Strong Organisation involves building organisational structures and processes to enable IARA to become self-sustaining while effectively supporting and representing adventure racing within the global sports community.

Strong Membership aims to provide support and resources to member adventure racing organisations worldwide, and to foster community through guidance and developmental assistance.

Strong Sport promotes a fair, safe, and sustainable sport and community globally by providing resources and establishing essential rules, framework and governance.

“This document is a living document that will be updated as we progress and requirements change,” explains Wayne Leek, IARA’s Media liaison.

To achieve these pillars and to enable the organisation to serve its members, community and sport, IARA designates tasks and assembles working groups to fulfil the tasks, whether an investigation, the writing of document, policy or guidelines, or the development of a workshop. Tasks have defined time limits i.e. three months, and, like an adventure racing team, working groups have four members for efficiency and consultation.

The first six tasks, two under each pillar, have been announced for projects starting in July with completion in September 2025. These projects are:

  • assisting countries to create national structures
  • youth adventure racing case studies and best practices
  • categorising adventure races (distances, duration, types, difficulty)
  • investigation into an international event calendar
  • fundraising plan for IARA and,
  • the development of a communication strategy for IARA.

IARA is calling for volunteers to populate working groups for these tasks. Keen volunteers can contact IARA at contact@internationaladventureracing.org

Notes from the presentation including the IARA’s Strategies and Policies and task summary documents can be found on IARA’s website under Inside IARA > Meeting Minutes and Notes.
