The Rib Mountain Challenge Returns with new Challenges
Press Release / 22.04.2026

STEVENS POINT, WI – The Rib Mountain Adventure Challenge, one of the largest adventure races in the United States, is returning to the Stevens Point/Plover area this Memorial Day weekend with over 300 racers already registered. This year’s event promises new challenges as racers, including soloists and teams of 2-4 members, will paddle, bike, and trek their way through the rugged, beautiful wilderness of Central Wisconsin, using only a map and compass to navigate the secret, unmarked course.
The race is not only for seasoned athletes but is also a popular family-friendly event. Racers of all ages come together to enjoy the race’s unique combination of adventure, teamwork, and outdoor exploration. Racers can choose from three race lengths: 3-hour, 8-hour, or 18-hour challenges, which offer options for participants of all skill levels, from beginners to experienced athletes.
“The adventures we’ve shared throughout our years participating in the Rib Mountain Adventure Challenge have become some of our family’s most meaningful and cherished memories,” said Jason Myers, who’s done the race every single year with his family.
The event has grown over the years and is now recognized as part of the Wisconsin Adventure Racing Series and the Adventure Racing World Series - North America Circuit, drawing participants from across the country. Last year, the race saw a surge in participation in the family division, and this year’s event is expected to see many families racing together, with families making up 25% of this year’s participants.
Returning racers Jazmine Darden and Lindy Johnson, who travel from Minnesota every year, have participated in the event since 2021. Despite having little experience with canoeing or orienteering when they first signed up, they have returned year after year, steadily increasing the challenge by stepping up to the 8-hour race. “We are incredibly grateful for the race directors and all of the volunteers who make this event happen,” said Darden. “We enjoy meeting other racers and love hearing all the wild, funny, and unforgettable stories from out on the course.”
Another family returning to the race this year is Dana and Leighton Tingley, who have been racing together since Leighton was 12 years old. “This race offers a unique and fun opportunity it’s hard to get elsewhere,” said Leighton.
Each year the course changes with new checkpoint locations, bike routes, paddling routes, and trekking sections. While the course remains a secret until race day, racers can expect a mix of terrain and obstacles that will test both their physical strength and mental resolve.
The Rib Mountain Adventure Challenge is the second race in the 2026 Wisconsin Adventure Racing Series and is part of the Adventure Racing World Series - North America Circuit. The event will take place on Saturday, May 23, 2026 in the Stevens Point/Plover area, with registration open until May 19 - volunteer positions available.
