Rising a total of 950 meters over just 5 kilometers, this Friday’s MSIG Lantau Vertical Kilometer (VK) is pushing runners to their limits. The race starts at sea level and finishes on the 934m-high summit of Lantau Peak, the second highest mountain in Hong Kong, attracting numerous trail running enthusiasts to challenge themselves.

It is local runner Chiu Wai Yin's (KNRDWB Winner Team) first attempt in MSIG Lantau VK race. She is excited to challenge herself on the tough course, “I am feeling nervous and excited at the same time as I have never participated in a similar race before. Climbing up over 900m within such a short distance course is really challenging, I only wish to try my very best and finish the race.”

British runner, Mark Agnew, is looking forward to pushing himself to his limit, “I am expecting a very tough trail with lots of stairs and to experience 'burning legs' when getting too fast. However, I am not putting much pressure on myself as I was injured earlier this year and am only hoping to enjoy and finish the race.”

Now in its fourth year, the course records for the MSIG Lantau VK were set in 2014 by American Joseph Gray for the men (37 min 45 secs) and 2016 by Japanese Yuri Yoshizumi for the women (45:59). There is a HK$2,000 bonus cash prize for breaking the course record.

The MSIG Lantau VK kicks off the Skyrunner National Series weekend in Hong Kong, which also includes the MSIG Lantau 50 on Sunday, December 3, which consists of a 27km Skyrace (over 2,000m elevation gain) and 50km Ultra SkyMarathon, also the Asian Skyrunning Championship race (over 3,500m elevation gain), both starting and finishing in Tung Chung.

Together, the MSIG Lantau races are part of the MSIG HK50 Series, which includes a leg on Hong Kong Island (October 21, 2017) and will end with a third and final leg in Sai Kung on February 10, 2018.

The event is possible due to the generous support of presenting sponsor MSIG Insurance (Hong Kong) Limited and supporting partners ActionX Store, Hoka One One, C3fit, Bonaqua, Plantronics, Camelbak, Coca Cola, Around DB, East Bali Cashews, Royale International, Skyrunner National Series China, China Skyrunning Association and Action Asia Foundation.
