Meet Walter from Zimbabwe.
Walter left Zimbabwe during the heightened political unrest in the Capital, Harare, more than 20 years ago. After growing up in his beloved country and raising a family in amongst the disorder and chaos - the challenges of daily life become too much. Walter decided it was time to search for a new life for his family in South Africa.
This is his journey.
Walter has been working on the city streets of Diepsloot as a local Arts and Crafts seller for almost 16 years - all whilst supporting his wife and three children.
He produces intricate and interesting pieces and as a result his designs were spotted by Heidi and Stephan Muller whilst out on a MTB ride through the area.
After a brief conversation and presentation of various crafts, Heidi immediately recognised his special talent and requested that he make unique handcrafted medals for their first Expedition Africa Event
This is a partnership that has lasted for the last 7 years and has, through Walter’s craft and the Muller’s vision, produced a number of beautiful race trophies, medals and memorabilia - each specific to their Events.
Walters talent has been noticed far and wide and his work has been referred to other event organisers and individuals needing something different. In this way Walter’s has been able to offer his skills in a sustainable and mutually beneficial manner.
This year at Expedition Africa Namaqua 2018 it is no different.
Each competitor will receive one of Walter’s special handmade trophies to commemorate their journey and experience at EA2018. A trophy that has been carefully created by the hands of someone who wants to enhance the lives of others as well as his family.
This is more than just supporting local business and recognising talent by a local artist. It’s about supporting a man's family and providing hope for their future.
If we all take time to practice kindness then certainly, more than anything, in the end it’s all about Love.
