Compressport Trail Menorca Camí de Cavalls
1500 Runners Ready to Race Round Menorca
Press Release / 18.05.2018
This Friday, Saturday and Sunday, a total of 1500 participants will compete in five races, of differing distances, around the island of Menorca. You will be able to see some of the best athletes in the world.
Today in Ciutadella, the curtain was raised on the seventh Compressport Trail Menorca Camí de Cavalls. Official race numbers were issued to the 1,500 registered participants in the Canal Salat Hall. Following this (at 19.00), Víctor Truyol, the race director went over some of the basic information about the race. It is divided into five distances and follows the Camí de Cavalls route around the perimeter of the island.
Everything is ready for tomorrow (Friday 18 May). At 8:30 am, the first group of participants in Ciutadella’s Plaça dels Pins will hear the starting pistol. Facing them will be Menorca’s 185 km perimeter. At 14.30 the remaining participants for this distance, including all of the favourites, will start from the same location. The fastest will complete the run around the island in about 19 hours.
Among those favourites are well-known names in Menorca. These include the Frenchman Antoine Guillon, winner in 2016 and 2017, the Catalan Eugeni Roselló and the Mallorcans Pere Lluís Garau and Toni Contestí. Gerard Morales, participating for the first time in Menorca, is also highly rated. In the women's event, Girona-born Gemma Avellí will try to win the title again against rivals including the Italian Alice Modignani-Fasoli and local athlete Tina Ametller.
In addition to the 185 km Menorca Trail Camí de Cavalls, the other competitive races include the 100 km Menorca North Coast Trail (starting from the port of Mahón at 00.30 on Saturday 19 May), the 85 km Menorca South Coast Trail (starting from Es Castell at 06.00 on Saturday), the 39 km North Coast Trek (starting from Cala Pilar at 08.00 on Saturday) and the 56 km South Coast Trek (starting from Cala en Porter at 09.00 on Saturday).
After popping into the ‘Luckily, I’m not running’ party at the Port Ciutadella Hotel tonight, the runners will go to bed early to ensure they get the best out the event. The race has a unique atmosphere and, according to forecasts, weather conditions will be good.
