Compressport Trail Menorca Camí de Cavalls
Antoine Guillon and Alice Modignani-Fasoli Take Charge
Press Release / 19.05.2018
The Frenchman and the Italian lead after the first third of the race. In the men’s event Gerard Morales is managing to keep up with Guillon with Pere Lluís Garau not far behind.
The 185 km TMCdC is the longest and toughest race of the 2018 Compressport Trail Menorca Camí de Cavalls. By sunset, the front-runners had already completed a third of their route. Sunshine was in short supply throughout the day. However, latterly, a lull in the constant wind coincided with a burst of sunny weather providing participants with picture postcard views of the north coast of the island.
So far, the runners have been battling it out for the top positions. The strategy of Eugeni Roselló and Gerard Morales was to stay with the lead group from the very start. Antoine Guillon and Pere Lluís Garau (first and second in 2017) lost a few minutes (4 minutes, in fact, at El Pilar, 32 km). Ten kilometres later in Binimel·là, Antoine Guillon was leading the race closely followed by Eugeni Roselló and Gerard Morales. Pere Lluís Garau was on their tails, just a minute behind.
However, at the food station here, Eugeni Roselló had a longer delay than his opponents. On the Cavalleria beach he lost 4 minutes, and by Cala Tirant (53 km) that had become 10 minutes. There he acknowledged he was suffering from foot pain, the Achilles’ heel of this runner. Together, Antoine Guillon and Gerard Morales took the lead and that was the situation at Arenal d'en Castell (63.8 km) They are followed by Pere Lluís Garau who is still only one minute off the pace. All three of them have a chance of victory.
Meanwhile, in the female category, Alice Modignani-Fasoli is currently in first position. The Italian is almost half an hour ahead of Sasha Roig, second. The favourite and last year’s winner, Gemma Avellí, has abandoned.
The runners are now facing the long hours of darkness which will be the key to keeping their options open. During the night, they will pass through Mahón which is where and when the 100 km TMCN will begin. This race follows the north coast to Ciutadella. The other three races will start in the morning: the 85 km TMCS (06.00 from Es Castell), the 39 km TCN (08.00 from Cala Pilar) and the 56 km TCS (09.00 from Cala en Porter).
