Fa'avae Joins Design Team For Godzone
World famous adventure racer Nathan Fa'avae will bring his adventure racing expertise and intimate knowledge of the Canterbury region of New Zealand to the eighth chapter of GODZone.
The consummate adventurer will join GODZone Race Director Warren Bates and Course Advisors Adam Fairmaid and Ian Edmond in designing the Chapter 8 adventure-racing expedition.
The seven-day event is being held in Canterbury from the 10th – 17th March 2019.
"We are delighted that Nathan is joining the design team for the second time in the history of the event," says Race Director Warren Bates. " Nathan is the most experienced adventure racer out there and also happens to run the largest 'all female' adventure race in the world, so he brings immense course design flair. He is a superstar, an outdoor guru in adventure circles and all-round great guy to work alongside."
Back in 2016, Fa'avae was involved with the course design of Chapter 6 held in his home district of Tasman. The race was one of the most successful GODZone events.
Fa'avae says he's amped to be back in the GODZone fold for 2019. "I was honored to be asked by the race director Warren Bates to have some input into the 2019 course. When I found out Chapter 8 was Canterbury it made my decision easy to work with the team as I know this area well and have enjoyed some wonderful trips into the wilderness parts of the region."
Fa'avae was upfront with course design assistance to ensure the seven-day course would travel through areas he has spent time adventuring in. "I believe I have valuable things to offer from decades of racing and it feels really good to be able to help shape a race course for GODZone teams taking it on. Working on the event is also in some way insurance for me not to be tempted to race again as that temptation never goes away," says Fa'avae.
The GODZone course is expected to be approx 530 km in length for the Pure racing category and reduced for the shorter formatted Pursuit and Prime classes.
Secrecy around the adventure-racing course is highly guarded, and details will be kept under wraps until teams come together in Akaroa, Canterbury for pre-race registration. "Sometimes the maps are given out the day before the race gets underway, and other times teams don't receive them until just an hour before the start. It forms part of the competitors racing strategy to be able to deal with the unexpected and adds to the excitement of the race."
