Milile and Giddiup looking strong after 5 days racing

Rosi / 14.08.2004See All Event Posts Follow Event
Millie is currently on the final paddle leg which they should finish around midnight Sunday (local time), to start the final trek in the dark. No doubt they are hoping it will prove a little easier going than the first kayak which they spent 18 hours on – including a few naps. Being one of the strongest paddling teams in the race, this indicates a very tough paddle for many of the teams yet to come through.

The team has had some tough times with all team members “falling in a hole at various stages, however each one has managed to climb back out and keep going. Toby Cogley (Millie) commented how happy he is to be in a team which knows each other well and is supportive and motivated, “I couldn’t continue otherwise.

They have been blown away by how tough the course is, and how long many of the legs have taken to complete. Like most teams, they underestimated travelling time for most of the course, failing to account for the sheer harshness of the terrain.

Having only slept two and a half hours on the trail in the 4 days prior to mid-camp they will be feeling the effects sleep deprivation. They spent only 4 hours sleeping at the AI mid camp, after preparing bikes and eating. As per usual they went for the quick transition to try and make up time on the lead team, AROC/Mountain Designs, any way possible.

With 13 hours between the two teams, and only two legs to go it would be a massive upset if they could take the lead at this stage. However it is at this stage of the race that sleep strategies can come into play, and could make all the difference.

Giddiup in third place is also looking strong and fresh, although not in so much of a hurry through transitions – staying a bit more relaxed. They had an eventful kayak with one team member ending up in the water, and another hallucinating, thinking the stars were torches shining in his eyes.

Giddiup is currently sitting in third place overall, and must be one of the lead teams in the ‘messages from supporters’ count! A lot of people at home wishing them well.
