Seeking PC12 in Colombia
Rob Howard / 11.09.2019
PC12 is one of the new ARWS Demonstration races and 12 teams set off this morning on a 300km course in the Antioquia region of Colombia. All but one of the teams is from Colombia and they are joined by one from Ecuador – Team Nomada EQB Adventure.
Race Director Ricky Velez says it is hard to choose a favourite. “I tell you that it is very difficult to place bets, of the 8 teams in the elite category 6 have very good international experience.”
One thing that is a good bet it that it will be a hot race. A temperature of 36 degrees is expected in the day and 28 degrees at night during the first two days of the race, while in the other two days remaining the temperature may improve a little to 32C!
Velez says, “The terrain has many routes and there will be lots of alternative routes to reach the CPs. Teams with the best navigators will be in front of strong teams who have less experience with a compass.”
He continued, “The teams will go rafting on a transparent river and class III rapids, then they will trek with very complicated navigation, passing through large areas of pastures. The bicycle section is composed of slopes where it will require cyclists to give their best effort.
“Stage 3 will be fun, it starts with a descent to a beautiful waterfall where teams will have to take the photo right inside the waterfall and then head towards a river for a tubing activity. Then comes a tough trek through native forests and a bicycle stage of just 32 km, but they will suffer as never due to the roads they will have to take.
The last trek is a 10km walk along a very quiet, rewarding ravine, so you can relax or run to reach the finish line. This is of course PC12, where the PC will only be in your dreams!”
