Press Release / 18.07.2022
"This new race course is fantastic, we had a perfect game plan and managed a perfect race!" - Hugo & Max at the finish line.
The ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Series continues. The latest stage was in the beautiful Engadin valley in the Swiss Alps, five weeks after the Isles of Scilly off the coast of England. The contrast could not have been bigger, yet the impressive racing was the same.
For most of the World Series race, in all three categories, the top teams broke away early and pushed hard down the valley. It is so impressive to see how fast they move. It is fantastic to see the top men, women and mixed teams racing almost head to head. In how many sports do you see that?
As in the previous races this year Max Andersson (SWE) & Hugo Tormento (FRA) - Team ARK - managed a perfect race and scored a comfortable win in the end, twenty minutes ahead of the two chasing French teams. Will anyone be able to beat them this year?
Max & Hugo, who also will be racing together at the 2022 World Championship on September 5th, pushed hard from the beginning as they as they wanted a comfortable cushion over the chasing teams. The winning time was: 4 hours 39 minutes and 16 seconds.
The big fight in the race was for second place in the Men's category where two French teams tried to shake each other throughout the day, but ended up finishing within 6 seconds of each other. In second place David Pesquet & Benjamin Dupain (FRA) - Team Surprise - finished in 4:59:21. Jeremy Huet & Tony Huet (FRA) - TwobrothersSwimrun Team Nu - finished in third place, only six (6) seconds behind in 4:59:27.
All teams raced hard through the mountains between Silvaplana and Maloja. In total they covered almost 44 km of which 37 500 metres was trail running on 10 run section, and there was almost 6000 metres of swimming on 9 swim sections in the mountain lakes. This race course is awesome and one of the most respected in the world of swimrun.
In the Mixed teams, Eugenie Plane/ Florian Schäfer (FRA) - Team ARK - won in 5:03:48. It was a fantastic performance putting them in fourth place overall. They won 10 minutes ahead of Sabina Rapelli/ Alexis Charrier (CH/FRA) - Team Envol Head Zoggs. The third mixed team was Team Teysachaud - Bastian Breine & Debora Verbeleen (BEL) finishing in 5:36:27.
In the Women’s category there were ten teams at the start. Several of the racers being among the best in the business. Desirée Andersson, the current mixed World Champion teamed up with Amanda Nilsson, who won in the Mixed category on Utö in May. This Swedish team is without a doubt one of the best in the world.
They managed to take the fifth place overall and won the women’s category with flying colors. Amanda and Desirée finished with an impressive time of 5:09:32. They were thirty-one minutes ahead of the equally impressive young French team of Aline Tavernier & Julia Moustakir. In third place Pauline Monière (FRA) & Elena Esper (ITA) - RMA Girls - finished in 6:29:37.
In this year’s solo category there were a total of 26 sracers who came to start in the World Series distance. Twenty men and six women. Almost all of them finished the race with big smiles, and Julien Veyne (FRA) was the first solo man in 5:34:33 minutes. Pommeline Warringa (NED) was the first solo woman to finish.
