Shore2Shore To Shore Again

Question: What has “one hundred and sixty-seven racers, the Canadian Coast Guard, two race directors, tens of volunteers, photographers, sponsors, salmon barbeque, front row seating for the Celebration of Lights grand finale and a parking by-law enforcement officer?

Answer: Sea2Summits Shore2Shore Adventure Race held on August 6, 2005 in Vancouver, BC.

Where else in the world could you pack so much into one day in an urban setting encompassing the unpredictable Pacific Ocean, marine traffic, sun worshippers laying on the beach and unsurpassed majestic coastal mountains?

Where? Specifically, Cypress Mountain to Jericho Beach.

Dean Payne, Race Director for Sea2Summit has combined stunning geography with a one day adventure racing format combining trail running, mountain biking, orienteering and kayaking. The Shore2Shore debuted last year and I had heard about this race from friends who had competed in 2004: their enthusiasm for the race piqued my interest and I left Vancouver Island to explore Cypress Mountain at its finest.

My friend and racing partner from Team Spirit Canada, Chris Koch, committed to race with me in the duo male category but pulled out due to feet problems that were sustained in the Full Moon In June Adventure Race and the 2005 North American Rogaine championships (that occurred the Tuesday and Wednesday prior to the Shore2Shore (and winning, it, by the way.)) His feet were trashed and competing in a sprint adventure race so soon afterwards would have slowed him down so that I could finally keep up with him.

I arrived just in time on Friday, August 5, 2005 to register at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver. Dave Howells gave the racers briefing and promised the assembly a true Sea2Summit experience in his backyard. He confirmed the weather was going to cooperate with clear skies and high temperatures: hydration was going to be a major factor.
