Phil Davies, we\'ve found your pants

Susan McKenzie / 16.11.2005See All Event Posts Follow Event
Beachcombers on the shores of the Tasman Sea near Westport have been finding more than pretty shells and broken glass this week. Sunglasses, paddles, shoes, drybags, flags, gloves and yes, a pair of pants. Rumour has it a kayak washed up into someone’s backyard.

The detritus all stems from the surf kayaking that began this race. The paddle out to sea was rough, but the paddle in was chaos, with boats capsizing and more than a few racers swimming into shore. Every piece of equipment imaginable was swept out of the kayaks, including a few mandatory gear bags. No racers were injured, but several kayaks were sacrificed in the surf, others seriously damaged. New kayaks have arrived from Queenstown and Christchurch and Nelson, while other boats have been (we hope) repaired.
