Some inside talk revealed that some sneaky strategy was employed amongst the leading teams as early as the 73km coast trek, leg 4. One team ducked off to sleep hidden in the bush away from view of their rivals to catch about 2 hours shuteye.
Another team took a couple of hours for a mid hike sleep after a navigational error at Sandy Cape set them back about an hour. After an ensuing ‘sense of humour failure’ it was decided the atmosphere was best dissolved with an immediate break, and the team paddled into Corinna all smiles and much less outwardly weary than many teams so far.
