Southern Traverse
U.S. Team Out of Time at Last P.C.
Rob / 22.11.2002

One team wishing they had gone a little faster were the US Team ‘Timbers Club at Snowmass’. They were the only team left out on the course and suffered the cruel fate of being stopped at CP38, the very last checkpoint. After completing the whole course to that point over more than 5 days it will be a disappointed team heading for the prize giving ceremony in the local stadium tonight.
Several other teams narrowly avoided their fate as a rush of late finishers came across the line in the final hour. Team Aussie Extreme were 17th at 16.29, followed by the short coursed team ‘Dobsons’ and then ‘Trek n’ Travel’ who crossed the line at 16.51. Outwood Bound were giving a bit of grace as they were so close to the end, and they finished at 17.22. Then the course was closed down.
Looking back over the race Hunt was pleased with the outcome. “This year was close to perfect. he said. “We’ve never had so many teams get round, which is ideal and though that was partly due to the kind weather it’s also because riding and paddling are not as physically stressful as trekking. I was concerned about the balance of the course being right, but it’s worked out well, and though there was little trekking the mountains were tough, some of the toughest we’ve ever had. The racers have responded well to the course and enjoyed it, and that’s what it’s all about.
