At 35 years of age, Guy Andrews’ considerable international surf ironman and adventure racing experience came to the fore, going to the front at the start of the swim and staying there all day to finish in a tick under 4 hours. Reigning national sprint champion Jody Zerbst crossed the line about 3 minutes later and NZ’s number 1 ranked Gordon Walker came in a distant 3rd after a poor swim.

Said Guy Andrews after the race, “I have been preparing for this race for several months now and was in really good shape going in, I had been working really hard on my run leg and that was the key for me. During the paddle leg it was like the old Uncle Tobys Ironman days, with Nathan Meyer, Phil Clayton, Wes Berg and I all pushing the pace. Running down the beach to the finish at Tugun Surf Club also gave me a strong sense of dejavu as Tugun was the location of my first surf ironman big win back in 1993. The Anaconda Adventure Race format has really fired me up and I’m hungrier than ever to show the young guns that there’s fight left in this old dog.
