Buff Betty Chattanooga Race Final Report

On November 12, 2006 Ambush Adventure Racing brought the Buff Betty Adventure Race Series to Chattanooga, TN for the final race in the 2007 series. Over 60 contestants in 25 teams stepped up to the start line on the Walnut Street Bridge at 10:00am on that Sunday morning. A race day weather forecast of a clear sky, brisk temperatures and gusting winds was a welcome change from the cold temperatures and scattered showers of the day before. The race director designed a fantastic course that took advantage of the North Shore area of Chattanooga, Coolidge Park, Chattanooga RiverPark and numerous green spaces in the surrounding areas.

The race started with a run across the Walnut Street Bridge and then headed up the Chattanooga RiverPark to the transition area to change over to canoes and kayaks for the paddle section. The Corps of Engineers and Mother Nature conspired to help the participants with great water flow and a tail wind. Racers had several checkpoints to get from the river bank and Maclellan Island. Fortunately, the water temperatures were mild so the stops to punch checkpoints weren’t too much of a hardship. Once the racers found all the paddle section checkpoints they made their way back to Coolidge Park to change disciplines.

Back in Coolidge Park teams took on the Adventure Guild Climbing Wall. Guild members served as safety and belay staff for racers. Racers had 4 minutes to climb the wall and all team members had to complete the wall to get full credit for this section. After the wall climb racers had a short run over to the bike drop to begin the first bike section. Teams now utilized both trails and roads to arrive at Stringers Ridge to begin the orienteering phase of the race.
