Eungella is perched on top of a range and the arduous mountain bike climb took its toll on the battle-weary team, who arrived at camp just before 9pm.
Shortly after arriving at the transition area, Rob Preston of the team said the whole section was made up of tough gravel and the Stingers found the last 40km tough going in particular.
He said the hardest part was when they thought they were almost at the top and then saw a sign that said there was 10km to go.
“Josh did some unbelievable turns on the front, towing for the whole last 50km.
“We’re a bit tired right now, but we’re obviously keen to see what kind of gap we’ve got to second place and find out what’s ahead of us.
Orionhealth.com made it into mid-camp about two hours behind the Stingers, and went straight to marking up their maps and planning their strategies.
Race official Nicole Briscoe said the Stingers were looking extremely motivated to widen the gap on the second half of the race.
