Nike first again despite Tobin’s stitches

Day 2 dawned with cold misty skies and an uncertainty of how Team Nike would go today. Michael Tobin had many stitches in his knee and hand after a fall in the run yesterday. Five teams did not finish the day before and another five did not make it to the last activity of abseiling in the cut-off time and received a penality.
The teams were transported once again by bus to the start line with a view of an incredible canyon. The race started with a run on the road through a small mountain village, but soon went off-road up a rocky creek bed, a bit like NZ's Coast to Coast run. The weather conditions were favourable, with cooling rain on and off.
The teams were all very close on this run, which continued through beautiful open caves and eventually had teams climb to the lakes where they had to paddle approximately 30 minutes, with a tough 1.5 km portage in between.
Nike was first out of the water, followed by Richard Ussher's Adventure Sports NZ. The next stage was a very steep run on a narrow single track through stunning scenery. At the end of this there was a 200 m horse ride for all teams, which was great fun. Horses were led by locals, and further back in the field the horse handlers eventually started running rather than walking! The atmosphere was great and everyone loved it.
