Day 0: Prologue
The Prologue race took place today – involving kayaking, swimming, and abseiling down a 50m building. Our champions got their act together. The route as short and fast, with the first teams completing it in about 45 minutes, and the last ones arriving in just over an hour.
The first two teams to arrive at the finish line ended up last in the ranking because they didn’t respect the course marks. The Lefroid team (New Caledonia/France) and the Hotel Le Surf team (Australia) each received a 30 minute penality .
The winner of the Proloque is the Caledonian team ‘J’aime le Nord. In second place was the French team “Casino Royal Team Eider Mercantour and in third place was the “Socafer NZ team with the Caledonian Philippe Lepoul.
This afternoon, the teams drove up to the north part of the island, where the organisation presented the course information. Tomorrow, teams will set out on the expedition route.
Highlights of the 350 km route will include:
- a total elevation gain of 7000 m over 4 to 5 days of competition
- the highest point will be the summit of Mt. Panier (1628 m)
- navigating through impenetrable Dumac forest
- two kayak legs that are expected to be windy
- a 20 hour hiking leg to ‘find’ the Parc de la Rivere Bleue
