The South African His People team, Australian Keen Torq’ers team and race organiser, Sonja Otto, visited Byletts school in the Balugha region to hand over soccer and rugby balls as part of the “Living balls initiative earlier today.

Student representatives from three other regional schools – namely Balugha, Nkwezana and Cintsa – also received balls in an effort to encourage the development of sport in the region.

According to Sonja, however, the Living Balls initiative is about much more than just soccer and rugby: “The four different colours on the balls represent different aspects of Christianity, and basically, it’s all about encouraging personal development and empowering the pupils.

The gifts were received with overwhelming enthusiasm and gratitude by the students, who treated the emotional visitors to a poignant performance of Xhosa songs.

“Byletts is one of the best schools in the whole Mooiplaas region, explained acting principal of Byletts, Mrs. Dingiso, “Our grade 12 learners achieved a 100% pass rate last year, and an average of 89% for the past six years.

The Bull of Africa Living balls project has also donated balls to schools in the Transkei region, and later visits to schools in the Katberg and Komga areas are also scheduled.

Graham Stanton, owner of Inkwenkwezi Game Reserve, accompanied the Bull of Africa group on their visit this morning. Graham is a familiar face at the school and has done a lot in terms of the general development and upliftment of this community – to such an extent that both the teachers and students affectionately refer to him as “Nondetye. He is currently involved in the R64-million development of new school premises and sports fields, which Byletts’ pupils will begin to enjoy early in 2009.

At the end of a short exchange between the two, principal Dingiso said to Mr. Stanton: “We will always remember you and when he was just out of earshot: “He’s such a nice guy.

Mr. Stanton will be hosting the Bull of Africa group at the Inkwenkwezi Game Reserve tonight, where the official race briefing and welcoming banquet will take place.
