With just a few hours to go until Doug is scheduled to set out on one of the most challenging sporting experiences of his life, the couple officially declared their love for one another.
Doug and Marjorie met on an online dating site exactly one year ago today. “We wanted a low-key ceremony, explained the then bride-to-be, “We’ll have a big party with family and friends when we get back to America.
Things haven’t always been sunny skies and smiles for the couple, however. Doug lost his home in hurricane Katrina, while Marjorie battled breast cancer until just last year. True athletes that they are, they have overcome these difficulties, and today, are happier than they’ve ever been.
When asked how it feels to sacrifice her wedding night to race strategising, Marjorie explained that she understands, and supports Doug completely. She was a skilled triathlete for 15 years before she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and is in the process of easing herself back into the sport.
Mr and Mrs Cousineau plan to enjoy their honeymoon in Cape Town once the race is over.
