Teams must cycle for 65km from Thomas River to the Wriggleswade Dam, where they exchange their bikes for kayaks, paddle for 40km in order to find the various checkpoints that are scattered along the shore of this massive dam, and then get back onto their bikes for a 50km ride to Clifton Grange Lodge, near Komga in the Eastern Cape.
South African team USN is still firmly in the lead; they have already arrived at Clifton Grange Lodge, which is the next transition area. In second and third place respectively, are South Africa’s uge.cyanosis and McCain Adventure Addicts. Spanish team, Buff Coolmax, is not far behind.
Further interesting developments:
Russian team Arena arrived at the Thomas River transition area at 18h10 this afternoon. They are the first of the three all-girl teams to arrive. Dew Point from South Africa and Haglofs from Finland are the other two teams in this category.
Adventure World Magazine, a combination team from the United States and Canada, has withdrawn from the race. They turned back to a previous checkpoint late last night for fear of not having enough food and water to take them to the next stop. This was when the team decided to withdraw. “I am very disappointed, because we came all this way to race, said team member Julie Ardoin, “But we will stay in South Africa for the rest of the week to explore and enjoy the country.
