Tuesday, 8:40 AM: South African teams McCain Adventure Addicts and USN are currently neck on neck at the front of the race, with uge.cyanosis not far behind them. These teams have already completed the 93 km cycling stretch from the Mpotshane Lodge to Mazepa Bay – which includes a jumaring checkpoint – and they are currently hiking along a scenic 35 km coastal trail from there to the next transition point at the Seagulls Hotel.

Eighteen teams have arrived at the Clifton Grange transition area so far, and fifteen have moved on towards the Mpotshane Lodge. At one stage last night, six teams were catching up on some much needed sleep here at the lodge.

“It’s going well, commented Courtenay Woodin from SA team Extreme Outdoors, “We’ve passed the 300 km mark and we’ve made some good decisions – we’re looking after our feet, ourselves, and we’re eating well.

Donovan Sims from SA team PeptoPro had this to say: “We’re not tired; it’s going well and we just want to finish this thing now.

The members of Australian team Keen Torq’ers were all smiles when they arrived at the lodge last night. “What can I say? We’re a happy team, explained team member Grant Suckling.

Word has it that two members of the Guatemalan team, Nahuales, have dropped out due to injuries, and that the other two members have merged with SA team New Balance. This 6-man team is currently making its way towards the Clifton Grange transition point.

Similarly, two members of Australian team 4TC – Grant Burke and Matt Koerber – have been advised to discontinue the race by the medical team, as both athletes have come down with a fever. The team’s other two members – Danielle Winslow and Liam Drew – will join the remaining members of Kreature.co.za and Toppie en die Laaities to form an 8-member team. Kreature.co.za’s Ian Adams has an ear infection and Toppie en die Laaities’s Shannon Kirkhoff has withdrawn due to a muscle injury.

In the midst of the madness that is transition, Fiona Tummon from Fifi & the rear derailleurs was treated to chocolate chilli cake and a song in celebration of her 24th birthday here at the Clifton Grange Lodge.
