Tension builds up at the finish line

When speaking to USN team member, Martin Dreyer, at the Seagulls transition area yesterday afternoon, he explained that the team was tired, but feeling good: “It’s hard, but we’re in one piece.� Upon being congratulated on their position in front since the beginning of the race, Jeannie Bomford had this to say: “Our spirits are high, but you never know what’s going to happen. Right now, our only focus is getting through the night.�
From the Seagulls transition point, teams must cycle for 45km to the Ninky Noo’s pub in Haga-Haga, then a further 30km to Inkwenkwezi, and from there, another 7km to a checkpoint at Areena Backpackers. From here, they will paddle for 4km towards Kwelera Point, and finally, hike for 5km towards the finish line at Balugha Inn.
McCain Adventure Addicts are still in second place; they have just passed the checkpoint at Ninky Noo’s, and the Bjurfors Adventure Racing team is not far behind them.
Many athletes have commented on how much they are enjoying the coastal scenery and friendly locals who cheer them on from the villages along the way.
Three members of the former Adventure World Magazine team were found hiking along the coast, close to the Jacaranda shipwreck and Seagulls Hotel yesterday and they couldn’t stop talking about what a good time they’re having. “We’ve just had lunch at an amazing restaurant down there and had a swim in the sea a little earlier on,� said Julie Ardoin, “It is so stunning here, this has been an amazing day.�
