Competitors described the course as “perfect� and “like paradise�. The sell-out field registered at Dunsborough Centenary Park yesterday and filled the local accommodation to capacity. With all the ski’s and mountain bikes in the cars around town there was no doubt there was an adventure race about to take place.
The region’s spectacular tide sculptured coastline and crystal clear water, with the added thrill of frolicking whales were showcased as individuals and teams competed for a share of the $30,000 in cash and prizes during 50km off-road challenge.
The Geographe Bay race is third in a Series of four races with the finale in Lorne, Victoria on December 7th. Today’s historical race was similar in layout to the other in the Series of these sprint distance adventure races and consisted of a 1.8km ZOOT ocean swim, the FINN 12.5km ocean paddle, the KEEN 14.2km coastal run, a 22km mountain bike leg with competitors finishing with a 2km MACQUARIE PRIVATE WEALTH team run to the finish line.
With most of the field being comprised of teams, some of best swimmers, cyclists, paddlers and runners formed formidable outfits to challenge each other in the males, females and mixed teams categories as well. There was a strong individual contingent with current world adventure race champion, Richard Ussher from New Zealand the big force in the men and Christie Sym from Sydney in the women, both unbeaten in individual races this year.
