Raid the North Extreme
24 Little Hours
Susan McKenzie / 18.08.2003

What a difference a day makes.
Twenty-four hours ago, Guertin was sitting at TA1, virtually overcome with heat exhaustion. His body depleted of electrolytes and water and salt, he could barely move, hardly drink, and was feeling dizzy and was at risk of being one of the first casualties of the Land Rover Raid the North Extreme.
“We lost so much time on that first bike leg, we had to do 16 extra kilometres, so we were really pushing so hard to finish it. Too hard, a bit. After we left the TA1, we went to the first lake and I just jumped in, he says. “The water just brought my temperature down, and then on the trek I was feeling fantastic.
With that, he pushes away from the boats and swims around to pick up the detritus that floated out of his pockets when he jumped. “Ah, well, just a bit more work for me, he laughs as he waited for his teammates to join him.
“That was a good trek, but we ran out of food, says his teammate Virginie Calme. “I have learned a lot on this race, especially to carry more food than I think I will need.
After spending only a few moments in the cool bliss of the shade of the rock face, Dirtworld.com clambered into its boats and paddled toward CP4 ... one step closer to their next gear drop, where they will finally find more food. Unless, of course, they decide to catch a bass or two in the lake.
