Day Two's big challenge, dragging canoes up and over the dam wall

20.08.2009See All Event Posts Follow Event
While the course description promises a sort of lunapark with lots of attractions for the third day, the second day was rather dull. Racers were either paddling or walking, and the only special task was climbing.

The third stage started Wednesday afternoon, with a 40 km long canoeing section. The only trouble was a few kilometers in from the start, where teams had to get their canoes over the dam of Jesenice Lake. This was a good exercise in showing how team-members are able to cooperate. Some teams waited for each other and pulled the canoes in with all four people. But in some teams, the first canoe left and the second had problems.

However, all the teams finished this stage without major problems. There were big differences between teams. The first team, OS-Direct, arrived at 8:30 p.m, while the last team arrived at 8 a.m. After the first night, all the teams were still in race.

The following section of the third and longest stage was an 80 km walk. It was really challenging. Teams complained about heat, dehydration, and the fact that most of it was on asphalt roads. During the day, it was over 30 degrees centigrade. This all took its toll. Seven teams withdrew during this stage or immediately after it. And it is very likely that teams remaining there through the second night will follow.

During this stage, Swedish team SVECO managed to get back to the second place, as they were walking really fast. Czech AlpinePro/Nutrend/Merida made a navigational error, and lost a lot of time. But they were able to get back to the third place. But Ukrainian OS-Direct were just incredible. They had beaten all the expectations of the organizers. In the second half of the stage they sped up and they gained an advantage of two hours.

Teams are now on a lunapark biking leg, with a lots of special tasks that include horse riding, iceberg climbing, castle cross and exposed terrain. You can follow the race on www.adventurerace.cz.
