The Last Teams Make the Finish Line

Jan Smolik / 26.08.2009See All Event Posts Follow Event
With first four teams safely in the finish, the race continued through its third night. There were actually only five teams remaining on the full course. Team Localblok/Bergans made a sleeping error on day two. They wanted to only sleep one hour and they ended sleeping four. "I woke up at night to feed my baby and I was surprised they had left so quietly they did not wake me up. Then I opened the tent and they were still sleeping there," described Lucka, wife of one of racers.

But it actually helped them. Although they were losing more than three hours to the fourth place and two hours to the seventh, they were well rested and fast. They passed teams in front of them in four hours and at the end of the 100 km biking leg they were already in fifth place, which they were able to hold it to the finish.
The next three team s arrived during night.

It was a close fight until the end, but finally Elrebnis came sixth, Fenrir/Scanservice seventh and USK Fakulta Managementu was eight. They were also the last team to finish the race as a complete team. Their time was little over 72 hours.

Last to complete the race was Shocart Ekonom Praha Outdoor. It seemed for a very long time they will not be able to arrive in time. But during the last stage they started to move really fast. "We told ourselves the limit is at 1 p.m. and we have to make it," commented Misa from the team. Their speed on this section was about the same as speed of winning team. Unfortunately one team mate had left them in the labyrinth, as his bike was not able to go any further. So they arrived 7 minutes before the cut-off, but incomplete. Anyway, hats off for their performance.

They also had an interesting story for the race, as German police searched them. One of their members had dreadlocks and they suspected them of smuggling drugs. The fact that they carried bottles with gels and other very suspicious looking liquids did not help them.

To end on the lighter note: When asked what their worst moment was, Ondrej from Fenrir answered "at one time, we were sure we need to follow yellow tourist path. But we went thirty minutes in the wrong direction. But the best moment was, when we turned over and found another team following us!"
