Southern Traverse
The End is in Sight
Victoria Warman / 13.11.2003

The winning team is expected to cross the finish line at around midday today (Friday). Team Icebreaker Bridgedale is currently in first place approaching Taeiri Mouth and TA11. Cycle Surgery Scott USA is in second place and fast closing on the lead making for an exciting race for the finish. However Cycle Surgery Scott USA is under protest on a missed check point.
Wanaka team CivicCorp who were doing the shortened experience race were the first over the line at two minutes past midnight. They had enought energy to run up the beach and were delighted to reach the end and celebrate with a bottle of champagne.
Greeted by race director Geoff Hunt, they praised him on the quality of the course, particularly the coasteering section and team member Kerry Fitzgibbon said, when the going got tough, "There were times when we thought you were pure evil!"
Further back on the course, Team Capriccio Swazi finally left the Lammerlaws behind them after 47 hours in the remote, exposed area. They caught up on a couple of hours sleep at Lake Mahinerangi before getting back into the race
