The Women’s Competition at La Ruta is the Best Ever

This year top endurance athletes Rebecca Rusch (USA), Louise Kobin (USA), Angela Parra (Colombia) and local favorites Adriana Rojas and Ligia Madrigal will compete in what is known as one of the most challenging adventure mountain bike stage races in the world. La Ruta co-owner, Pipa Leon, is very excited about the great lineup of women competing in La Ruta. “La Ruta is an adventure that is a perfect fit for the mind and body of an extreme woman endurance athlete. It is an experience that women will enjoy and a race where they can excel year after year.�
Kobin, Rojas, Parra, Madrigal, and Rusch have won many extreme endurance races around the world and each of them has experience riding in the diverse and challenging terrain found in Costa Rica. Kobin, won first place at La Ruta 4 times (2003, 2004, 2005 and 2009) and second place twice (2006, 2007). Rojas took first place at La Ruta in 2008.
Parra is the Colombian National Mountain Bike Champion and she took 2nd place in the mountain bike competition at the Central American Games. Madrigal is the Mountain Bike Marathon Costa Rican National Champion and she took 2nd place at La Ruta in 2005; she has been key component of the top adventure racing teams in the area. Rebecca Rusch took 4th place overall at La Ruta when she competed in 2005. Rusch recently took 1st place at the Leadville 100 where she broke the women’s record.
Rusch is looking forward to the La Ruta challenge this year. She states, “Now that I have more experience and knowledge of bike racing, I want to come back and see if I can improve on my placing. La Ruta is also one of the oldest and most known endurance mountain bike events, so I have to come back and try again.�
Kobin is excited to compete in La Ruta again this year. When discussing her La Ruta race in 2009 she said “After missing my favorite race, La Ruta de los Conquistadores last year due to a broken foot, I was really looking forward to racing again. This was my 6th time racing La Ruta!!�
It will be exciting to see what happens when these competitors go head to head at La Ruta 2010.
