Day Off Goes to the Dogs

Cory Wallace / 12.08.2011See All Event Posts Follow Event
Our day off started off on a good note with the breakfast bell getting most of the racers out of bed at 8am, instead of the usual 5:30 wake up call. Breakfast itself was a big change as well with people acting like people again and not like a bunch of drones running around trying to get ready to race their bikes for 4-12 hrs.

Throughout the day racers were taking the chance to lounge around, wash clothes in the river, clean water bottles, go over there bikes and relax in any way possible. Many riders opted to hike around the hills checking out old gher camps while a few of us hopped on our bikes to spin out our legs.

By mid afternoon word had gotten around the valley that there were a bunch of aliens camped out in yellow tents and we were joined by a bunch of locals. The first to show up were a couple of kids on their horses who were immediately welcomed into camp.

On my ride I went out to check the first part of the course for stage 7. 1 km into it I came across a gher camp on my left, with a huge Yak herd on my right. This turned out to be a bad place to be as two dogs came charging out of the gher hut and put the charge in an effort to protect their herd.

I tried to hammer away but these dogs were well fed and on a mission. There was no getting away so I stopped, hucked a water bottle at one dog, and then used my bike as a shield. This kept the Mongol dogs at bay and soon one retreated back home, while the other kept on the attack for 10 minutes. I slowly backed away and was finally able to continue on my ride and get back to camp. Not quite the relaxing day I’d hoped for!
