Going in Circles in the Czech Adventure Race

Jan Smolik / 17.08.2011See All Event Posts Follow Event
The course at the Czech Adventure Race will be longer than 500 kilometers, yet the organizers are still afraid the race will be too fast. The race area is composed of two different regions. The Middle Posazavi region, which surrounds the valley of the Sazava river, is a hilly region with lots of tarmac roads. Zelezne Hory (Iron Mountains in translation), where competitors will be until Thursday has a more mountainous look with less roads.

The character of the region has influenced the design of the course. Bike sections will be fast, though some hills will tire the racers. It will mostly be easier to go longer distances on tarmac roads, than to go straight.

The area around Ledec nad Sazavou, where the race headquarters is, is not very suitable for trekking stages. It would be long walk on asphalt roads, which tends to be boring and only damages the feet of the competitors. No one much likes walking on asphalt. This is why the organizers decided on combined inline-trekking stage. Teams will be able to decide whether they will walk or use skates. They will even be able to go without skates. However, it will probably be possible to skate through long sections. CP’s are located away roads and it will be necessary to walk.

The area of Zelezne hory is more suitable for trekking, so this is where a 65 km long trekking stage will take place. One of the possible routes involves swimming across the lake. We will see, how many teams will swim and how many will walk around.

Canoeing will take place on the Sazava river, which is mostly flat. The only interesting section is just above Ledec and it is called Stvoridla. This section is only navigable during high levels of water. This is why the race still has two options. If there is enough water, competitors will paddle through Stvoridla to the finish line. If not, teams will leave their canoes a few kilometers upstream and walk. Rainy weather during the last few days promises possibility of the nicer and longer paddling stage.

To sum up the stages. The race starts with a short prologue followed by 110 km of MTB and 75 km of inline-trekking. Wednesday night will see teams on another 110 km long MTB which includes 20 km of trekking. This stage will take competitors to another TA in Chotebor.

This TA will see two sets of technical disciplines and the 65 km trekking stage. With the final 70 km of biking teams will get to river where the paddling stage will lead them to the finish line back in Ledec.
