The Three Peaks Yacht Race
On the Way to Whitehaven
Rob Howard / 16.06.2013
With the race moving quickly this year there was alot of activity early on Sunday morning as the leaders all made their way successfully through the Menai Strait in the dark and out into the Irish Sea on their way to Whitehaven and Scafell Pike. There was no change in their positions after the passage of the Strait, with Dido continuing to lead from Nunatak, pursued by White Cloud, Moby J, 1RTR and Flycatcher in decreasing winds.
Those who came down off a windy Snowdon summit later on Sunday morning found the tide against them and were held in the Strait for a few hours until they could get through. All except Questar who made the decision to go around Anglesey. This rarely pays off in the race, but in this case it has as they have taken advantage of the steady winds and managed to stay in contention with those chasing the leaders.
There was one withdrawal in the night when an ankle injury to one of the Fire Dancer runners forced them to give up the Snowdon run, although the team will continue the race unranked. The runners had completed the mountain run and were on their way back to Caernarfon when they had to stop.
At the time of writing only one set of runners are still on Snowdon, those from Intrepid Misfits, who said they would be taking their time as their skipper did not want them back until 12.30, though with the boats ahead of them all making a comfortable passage of the Strait it’s a decision which has cost them a lot of time in the race.
And Driac. They have now left Abersoch and are moving around Bardsey Head on their way to Caernarfon.
