World Champions will need to travel about 130km a day to win the ARWC Costa Rica 2013

Press Release / 29.11.2013See All Event Posts Follow Event
The 815km route consists of; 21.3% trekking; 49.3% Mountain Bike; and 29.4% rafting or kayaking

The first team to cross the finish line in the Adventure Race World Championship Costa Rica 2013 will do it 140 hours after the race start, according to the estimated time by the ARWC 2013 Organizing Committee. To achieve this, the four competitors would have traveled around 130km each day. "The team who wants to win 2013 World Championship should strive and be prepared to suffer daily. As I know the teams and their captains, I'm sure they'll have short sleep during the race, or maybe no sleep until some days after the race starts. But it's not just the short sleep, but all the extreme conditions they will face," said Alexander "Pongo" Baker, ARWC 2013 Race Director.

The ARWC is a Non-Stop competition, unlike races with defined stages, in the World Championship the competitors define when and where they rest or eat. During the 815km course will be only one mandatory stop (four hours). Here the racers would be asked to rest for a while and they would have to perform some medical and physical tests, just to confirm they are in good physical condition and are able to continue.

The competition, would start somewhere in the southern border of Costa Rica. Teams would have to complete 173km of trekking, 400km of Mountain Biking, and 239km of kayaking and rafting;as well as additional sections with ropes to complete the +815km course.

Costa Rica's weather, tides and currents, as well as the dark zones (where teams can't navigate at night) should be consider on their race strategy. The planned course permits more than one choice of route, so navigators' orienteering skills would be crucial during the race.

"We decided to recall the old-school years of adventure racing and expeditions. The route will be a huge challenge for the competitors and especially for navigators. They should think well about each decision in order to lead their teams to achieve the final line, " said Baker.
