There would appear to be a streak of bad luck running through the Swedish contingent in this years AR World Champs. Following the withdrawal of Silva due to a shoulder injury, AXA-adidas, captained by Mikael Lindnord has also withdrawn from the race. To add insult to injury, their media team has had several misadventures, such as double flat tires on their press vehicle, bush whacking through the jungle to a strategic photo location, only to miss their teams by ten minutes, or being stranded in the Monster Mangrove for seven hours when their boat broke down.

AXA-adidas's website provides us with the following insight into the reasons of their withdrawal;

When arriving to TA5, John, Mikael, Anders and Jo had some well deserved rest in the big gym hall. Unfortunately when they got up, Anders was feeling really bad – sore stomach and very dizzy. He told us that he had trouble with his stomach during the bike section as well, and that it arrived after he had refilled his bottle in one of the river crossings on the MTB section. Anders was the only one in the team that filled up his water bottle here, so it’s very likely the reason.

The team decided to let Anders have more rest, but after a few hours, he was feeling really bad and the medic team decided to give him a double IV for two hours. With this situation – the team made a mutual decision that it would be impossible to continue out on the hardest leg of the race – a trekk that would go on for around 40-50 hours.

We have done a good try on this course – this course is for real, so tough. But we have done this decision now, because it’s impossible for Anders to continue. It’s without reason to go up over 4000 meters altitude, where it’s raining and is super cold, when a person can barely stand up down here where it’s 20 degrees. These things happens in races like these, said Mikael after the decision was made.

They’re still in good spirits, even though it’s of course dissappointing to quit a race. Anders is up on his feet and will have a good rest at the hotel in San Gerardo togehter with the rest of the team.
