It was a long wait at the final Transition for Team Thule Adventure to arrive, they were hours longer than expected and were obviously having some difficulty. Just how much was revealed when they rode in with Jackie Boisset supported between two of his team mates, and Mimi Guillot in floods of tears.
Jackie didn’t look as though he was aware of what was happening around him and Mimi confirmed that there had been times when he didn’t even recognise his team mates. That he would not know her (they are a couple) was distressing, and they have been through many tough races and situations before, but have never been pushed to this extreme.
The transition was just as hard for Jackie’s mother and father, who had been waiting for them almost 12 hours, worrying and wondering what was happening. His mum just kept repeating ‘be careful, be careful’, and then she had to turn away, unable to watch any more.
Albert Roca and Stu Lynch took charge of a confused situation and watched over and supported Jackie as they prepared the harnesses for the zip line tour through the forest canopy. Mimi Guillot was working on autopilot, organising the helmets and soon the team were ready to go, setting off from a platform nearby.
The canopy ride took about 45 minutes and Boisset seemed a little better when he came back to the transition, where the team prepared for a one hour raft down to the finish at Sarapiqui. It is an easy raft and its fortunate that these final two stages do not require too much physical effort, in every sense Thule Adventure should be able to hold to the finish, with is in the centre of town on the local football field.
They have given their all and gone to their absolute limits to get so far, and have only a little further to go now.
