UK Expedition Adventure Race ITERA Attracts Unprecedented International Field
Open Adventure News Release / 08.08.2014

On Monday, the UK’s World Series expedition adventure race – The ITERA – will start from Caernarfon in North Wales. It will take the mixed teams of four on a 600km multi-sport journey southwards towards Cardiff; through the mountains, lakes and wilderness landscapes of Wales.
The promise of dragons and castles, it seems, has attracted the largest ever international field of any UK adventure race. “Around half the field is coming from abroad” explained race director James Thurlow. “That says something very positive about British adventure racing”, added course planner Tom Gibbs.
There is strong representation from Europe amongst the international teams, including the Lowland Leopard team, organisers of Auenland Adventure Race in Germany.
‘Raid74 Maxi0Race.org’ from France also return to the UK scene, having raced here in 2012 in the previous British expedition race – the STING in Stirling. The Spanish-speaking countries are well-represented with ‘Walhalla’, from Spain & South America, racing in the UK for the first time, and ‘Aventura-Xperience’, also debuting in the UK.
Team ‘Czech AR’ race with Open Adventure for the first time at ITERA, having just won the Beast of Ballyhoura race in Ireland. Team member Paval Paloncy is a name those familiar with the ultra-running scene will recognise, as he won the Spine Race on the Pennine Way back in January.
‘Team Odyssey’ are the sole USA team; well known on the international adventure racing scene, having raced in Costa Rica last year at the World Championships, and in Scotland in 2012. Scandinavia has a very strong showing, with three Danish teams and two from Sweden, and one Danish-Finnish team.
