Huairasinchi - The 2014 Adventure Racing World Championships
What, Where, When?
Rob Howard / 08.11.2014
Teams are just now finishing up delivering their race boxes at the Race HQ and completing any last minute shopping as this afternoon there is a full programme including the official race opening.
The activities will take place in the historic Quito old town, starting with an official picture of everyone outside the San Franciso church and then the presentation of the teams. After a dance show by the Muyacan group there will be some opening speeches by Huairasinchi Director Rodolfo Peralta, ARWS Director Craig Bycroft and the Mayor of Quito, Mauricio Rodas.
There will then be a flag parade to the National Teatro Sucre for the opening ceremony and technical briefing, which will take place from 18.00 to 21.00. The Theatre is one of Quitos best known buildings, a historic theatre and opera house first constructed in 1877, which hosts international artists and companies.
Today it will see a gathering of international adventure race teams from around the world and they will find out exactly what lies ahead in the next 8 days of competition. This is where the full course in all its detail is revealed to the teams and they receive their route books. There is usually an intense and detailed Q&A too.
Depending on how many of the maps they are given there may be some work to do marking the route onto them later in the evening, but teams will be keen to get to bed, to try and sleep if they can, as the buses leave for the race start at 4am tomorrow.
The race start itself is scheduled for 8am high in the Andes, but at the moment the location is still a secret.
You can follow the race live and see the full course details from tonight on http://live.huairasinchi.com/index.cfm
