The Three Peaks Yacht Race 2015
A Steady Start to the Three Peaks Yacht Race
Rob Howard / 27.06.2015
The 3 Peaks Yacht Race got underway at 18.00 a mile off Barmouth this evening. When the start flare fired team Tramontana were briefly first over the line but were quickly overtaken by the Dutch team on Rio in their J120 and last year’s winner, Wight Rose, the Reflex 38.
It wasn’t long before the Mercian Regiment pulled into 3rd in the J111 (the same boat which was sailed to second last year by a different military team). Soon the yachts were strung out across the bay, making for Bardsey Head, with the 3 fastest quickly establishing the race order.
The yachts had left the harbour at 17.00 in procession behind the Barmouth Lifeboat, passing the crowds gathered to see them on the breakwater and motoring across the bar outside the estuary to reach the start line out at sea.
Morning conditions had been rough, with big rollers across the start line, but by the evening the sea state had settled and there was a gentle South westerly breeze to get the yachts going on their long journey to Scotland.
