At 11:40 am on Friday August 12, the 13th edition of Huairasinchi began with 24 teams on the starting line.

In the first day of HUAIRASINCHI Colombia 2016 the teams competed close to Buenaventura in the Cauca Valley. An introductory stage was held before the official starting line, and teams were able to experience travel aboard a “brujita”, a local means of transport along the railway lines. This stage was not included in the official race time.

The official starting line was in San Cipriano where teams began with an 11 km tubing leg down the Dagua River navigating the meandering river and some rapids. The San Cipriano Nature Reserve is home to a beautiful tropical forest with trails, waterfalls, and pools of crystal clear water.

The first team to arrive at the Transition Area (AT1) in Cordova was #22 Cross Fitness Adventure Team in the adventure category with a time of 2 hours 40 minutes. In the elite category, two teams tied with a time of 2 hours 41 minutes: #6 Fairis from Ecuador and #13 Saferbo-Karens-Safetti from Colombia. The rest of the teams followed close behind in this first section of the race. The last team to arrive at 4:30pm was #1 Ateneas Colombia.

During the second section of the race teams had to row 2-person kayaks 43 km down the Dagua River to the Buenaventura Bay on the pacific coast. In Buenaventura, the jungle meets the ocean in Colombia’s most important pacific port. The region is known for its biodiversity, abundant foliage, and powerful rivers.

Adventure teams had a shorter route to complete and arrived at AT2 earlier. The first team into the transition was #21 Cross Fitness – Kaibil with a time of 3 hours 19 minutes. A little before 8pm the first elite team, #3 Bosi Adventure, arrived with a time of 5 and a half hours. All teams had passed AT2 by early morning Saturday, the last two teams being #2 and #15.

On Saturday teams will start the first mountain biking section up into the Andean foothills to El Queremal and AT3.

During these first sections of the race the signal was low and as a result the trackers were slower in registering the exact times and details of the teams. As the racers get closer to Cali on Saturday, the signal will improve and people back home will be able to see each team’s track with much better detail.
