Huairasinchi Colombia
Huairasinchi Day 2
Race Release / 15.08.2016

In the early hours of HUAIRASINCHI’s second day, the very last teams arrived at the Transition Area AT2. Here they began a mountain biking leg up through the foothills of the Andes through the Cauca Valley.
A little before 4 am, the first two teams finished the 67 km bike leg. #3 Bosi Adventure from Colombia and #6 Fairis from Ecuador, arrived at AT3 with only a few minutes of separation. Here they had to complete a circuit hike of 20 km close to the town of El Queremal.
Unfortunately, during day 2 several teams decided to withdraw from the race. Team #25 Travesia Antartica was the first group to retire because of physical exhaustion. During the afternoon after finishing the El Queremal trek, team #4 Ecuador Movistar withdrew because of mechanical problems with their bikes. In the evening team #1 Ateneas Colombia, the only all-female team, retired after arriving at El Queremal, and soon after, the last team to ride into AT3, #2 Be+Evex, also decided to stop racing.
By the afternoon and evening all remaining teams had arrived at Transition Area 3. After completing the trekking loop, they arrived back at El Queremal to pick up their bikes and continue towards Cali. In this section of the race, teams will reach the course’s highest elevation at 2225 masl. They will pass through coffee plantations and farm lands as they get closer to Cali. This leg ends at the statute Cristo Rey on the outskirts of the city.
In AT5, teams will leave their bikes to start a trekking leg, first stopping in Cali and the official race headquarters and hotel, the Torre de Cali. At the 45-story, 150 meter building they will complete an impressive rappel from the roof, before continuing their trek up and out of the city.
The first two teams to complete the rappel during the early hours of the night were #3 Bosi Adventure and #6 Fairis, who continue to race neck in neck in the middle section of the race. They should arrive at the next transition in Mulaló during mid-morning Sunday.
