The action from Stage 1 – the Desert Technologies 39km Cross Country Race.
The conditions on the trails are good; it's dusty and dry out there under the hot Alice sun with a top of 29 expected today. Stage 1 winner Ben Henderson retained his lead from the 10km mark to finish in 1:53:59. "It was pretty similar to what I thought, I had a bit of a recon yesterday, and the trails are a little bit more well-groomed than when I was here 2011, which makes them really enjoyable; fast, flowing, it's still tough, but it's a little bit more easy going, and a bit more rewarding."
"It was I think about 10kms in, I got into the single track first, and just kept the pace on from there, it slowly started to string out, and I kept that pace going, and thought I'll see what happens. Chris was there for a while, and I thought I'll keep pushing, and once you're out of sight it's always a good thing, but at the same time on the trails, you're just trying to find your rhythm. "I learnt a lot from the first year I was here, dug way too deep on the first stage, so I just tried to keep a bit of a lid on it today, and remember that there are three days to go!"

The Redback 2017 action continued tonight with Stage 2 – The Rapid Ascent 300m ANZAC Hill Climb!
A tough heart-pumping ascent up ANZAC Hill racing against the clock as the sun set on an awesome day of MTB. Fastest tonight was Oliver Hartung in 30.24 seconds (averaging 35.7km/h) which has to be a course record(!), second fastest overall was Craig Turner in 40.297 seconds (26.8km/h) and third was Imogen Smith in 43.617 seconds (24.8km/h). Well done riders on an epic first day, and congratulations to our placegetters. We will see you all again tomorrow for Stages 3 & 4!
