The Cumbria Way Ultra
The New Cumbria Way Ultra 2014
News Release / 28.04.2014

The inaugural staging of the Cumbria Way Ultra is set for the weekend of the 13th/14th September 2014.
The 73 mile route sees competitors follow the iconic Cumbria Way trail, which was first devised in the 1970s by local members of the Ramblers. The event route provides a relatively low-level crossing of the Lake District National Park passing through the varied terrain of the beautiful Lake District giving over 10,000 feet of ascent. Competitors will follow tracks and paths along valleys and over passes in the midst of stunning scenery including Coniston Water, Tarn Hows and Dungeon Ghyll and crossing Stake Pass to Borrowdale, Derwent Water and Keswick, before continuing to Caldbeck passing Skiddaw House and over High Pike, the highest point on the trail.
The event starts at The Gill in the picturesque town of Ulverston in the South Lakes. The start is marked by the distinctive sculpture by Chris Brammall depicting a compass with a cairn in the centre containing rocks representative to the geology along the Cumbria Way. The route finishes at the Market Cross in front of the Old Town Hall in Carlisle.
The Cumbria Way Ultra looks set to be one of the Lake District’s premier ultra races in 2014.
Event Director Gaynor Prior said: “We are very excited to be staging this event showcasing the beautiful trails in the Lakes. The event is open to solo runners and to relay teams of 2 who complete 43 miles and 30 miles respectively and relay teams of 5, who will complete approximately 15 miles each.
