AVRIL MARY COPELAND
Current Residence: Nashville, Tennessee
Age: 26
Employment: Personal Assistant in the Country Music Business
Race Experience: 3 years
Avril has made Nashville home for the last four years where she works as personal assistant to a country music song writer. Growing up in Dublin she played on the Irish field hockey U18 and U21 team and had just made the senior squad the year she moved to the USA.
Growing up in Dublin, the only off road biking Avril did was on a tricycle at the age of 6 on the Dublin footpaths. Obviously television had a big influence of Avril, because after seeing Eco-Challenge Borneo on television she wrote to the top team to get advice on how to get involved.
That was three short years ago. Avril’s dad fully supports her adventure racing passion; her Mom thinks golf is a much better idea. After all field hockey transfers much better to golf then ascending up a 1200ft dome!
Favourite Quote:
“When you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs, it’s quite possible you have not grasped the situation….
Favourite aspect of Expedition races: I love the teamwork involved. I believe the expedition races are an extreme way to reveal a person’s character. Its always a plus when the characters revealed mesh well together. If they don’t …
Least Favourite Aspect of Expedition Races: Dealing with smelly gear after the race!
Favourite AR moment: During last years Primal Quest during the final paddle across Lake Tahoe. Early in the morning with the Harvey’s red devil lights as our reference point, Joe and myself sang “Burning Ring of Fire at the top of our lungs for a good section of that last leg. If only we had a recorder…. Little did we know that was the night Johnny Cash passed away…. hopefully it wasn’t our singing!
Piece of Gear I’m most excited to use for Primal Quest Gerber’s EZ-Out Jr. River Knife. I am hoping that I will only have to use this knife when I am so tired that I can't open my peanut M&Ms!
