Mountaineering Leg Will be a Tough One
Corey Rosen / 09.09.2005

We have so information on the second place teams and on past checkpoint 12, the beginning of the Mountaineering section. Checkpoints 13, 14, and 15 are unmanned, so there is no way to gauge how fast the rest of the teams will be completing this section. To see photos of this section and how trecherous the terrain is, please see the Pre-Race Mountain Leg photo gallery.
While some teams have hiked through this section through the night, most teams have arrived at checkpoint 12 this morning. They will probably have an easier time getting over the rough terrain during the day.
Team 6 - FonGas has withdrawn from the race and will no longer be racing unranked. Team 18 - Total Commencal, who was in the fourth place spot at the end of day one, missed checkpoint 8. Instead of taking the time penalty, one of the team members decided to drop out of the race. The rest of their team will continue the race unranked.
At this time during the race, we have one team withdrawn, two teams racing unranked, and three teams racing on the short course. With thirteen teams still racing ranked on the full course, and the Velebit trekking section ahead, this is still anyones race. A simple injury could bring any team up in the ranking.
